Bearden High School football team knew reversing their annual rivalry matchup against arch-rival Farragut would not be easy, especially after suffering two consecutive tough losses against West and Alcoa respectively in Weeks 1 and 2, but Friday will give them their opportunity to make that change happen.
High school football season kicks off this Thursday and Friday in Knoxville area schools, beginning with select games on Thursday night and then full schedules on both days. Bearden Bulldogs entered Thursday’s “Backyard Brawl” against arch-rival Farragut with an extended losing streak, dating back to 2018. But thanks to an emphatic fourth-quarter performance, home-standing Bulldogs were able to achieve an unexpected 21-14 win at Bearden High.
Both teams feature impressive running games with De’Jauvis Dozier leading Oak Ridge with over 1000 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns while Jayzon Thompson of Bearden boasts 963. Almani Rembert and Brandon Heyward both possess over 500 yards receiving for their respective schools.
High school football action continued across East Tennessee on a hot and muggy Friday, as teams in Knox News Game of the Week included Halls-Gibbs and Powell-Farragut as well as familiar opponents with an asterisk representing regional contests.

Knox News Game of the Week features a Class 6A matchup between West and Farragut – two powerhouses who have already begun the year strong with wins over Dobyns-Bennett and Powell respectively.
Oak Ridge has had an outstanding start on the ground this year with De’Jauvis Dozier leading them with over 1,000 yards and 15 touchdowns through eight weeks. Blaine Stansberry has also been an important wide receiver threat. Anderson County entered their season 0-1, yet have an expansive schedule that features Clinton returning, Bearden joining, and competing against Powell on Rivalry Thursday TV on Oct 26.
As temperatures heat up on Friday in East Tennessee, the Knox News Game of the Week will take place at Bearden when Alcoa hosts Bearden Blue Devils in a showdown between these teams with losses to start their respective seasons and looking for their first wins of 2023.
