Channel 4 launched Liverpool-based Brookside in 1982 as a pioneering daytime drama; unlike Coronation Street and Emmerdale Farm, which focused on working-class settings, Brookside focused on middle-class inhabitants living on new housing estates – something not seen on American soaps before then.
